Inside the Gaza humanitarian crisis: Oday’s story
Ten-month-old Oday was born into an already precarious situation in Gaza before he lost his entire immediate family in a bomb strike. There are estimated to be tens of thousands of children like Oday, who've been orphaned after three years of conflict.
In addition to losing family members, children like Oday are facing an ongoing humanitarian crisis, including getting enough food to eat.
“His body was so weak, his eyes sunken,” says Oday’s uncle who is now caring for him at an overcrowded temporary shelter. “He couldn’t sleep well, and each day his condition got worse.”
When a UNICEF-supported mobile health team caught up with Oday and measured his arm to check for malnutrition, he was in the red-zone and suffering from severe acute malnutrition. This is the deadliest form of malnutrition and needs specialist treatment to recover from.
Thanks to donor support, in the first half of 2026 we screened more than 223,000 kids for malnutrition. We identified over 3,000 girls and boys, just like Oday, who were suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition and admitted them for treatment.
"Even in overcrowded shelters and under immense pressure, timely support can save a child’s life,” says Melanie Galvin, Chief Health and Nutrition for UNICEF State of Palestine.
For children like Oday, therapeutic food helps them put on weight and regain their strength. It comes in small packets, easy enough for little hands to hold. Three of these a day, for 6 weeks is what it takes for a child to recover. They say you can't put a price on a child's health, but at 60 cents a packet, these are the most cost effective method we have for saving the lives of malnourished children in Gaza.
In just ten days, Oday was smiling again. His arm measurement had increased, and he started crawling and responding to sounds.

At least 300 children have been reportedly killed in Gaza in the 300 days since a ceasefire was announced in October 2025. This amounts to an average of one child every day, despite an agreement for the suspension of military operations and the full entry of humanitarian aid and relief almost 10 months ago.
