On June 24th, two powerful magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck northern Venezuela within minutes of each other. The damage was severe and widespread, including to homes, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. Thousands have been killed or injured, and more than 1.8 million people, including 680,000 children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
UNICEF teams are on the ground working to deliver urgent, life-saving aid to those affected. Right now, children and families desperately need shelter, clean water, food and medical care.

What's happening in Venezuela and how can I help?
Right now, the best way to help children and families in Venezuela is by supporting our appeal.
For children, the risks now extend well beyond the initial impact of the earthquakes to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Almost 18,000 people have been left homeless, 38 hospitals are damaged and 432 schools have been damaged, in the Capital District alone.
Urgent needs include safe water, healthcare, nutrition support, child protection services, psychosocial support, temporary learning spaces and other essential supplies.
Our teams are on the ground, working alongside the Government of Venezuela, and our local and international partners. We've deployed multidisciplinary surge teams - emergency, health, WASH, nutrition, child protection, communication and supply specialists - to reinforce the country office and accelerate delivery of emergency aid.
So far we've delivered 82 metric tonnes of emergency supplies, enough to support more than 100,000 people. The shipments include essential medical and emergency health kits, personal protective equipment for health workers, collapsible water storage containers, water purification and distribution tanks to help restore access to safe drinking water, hygiene kits for affected families and tents for setting up child-friendly spaces and service points, mobility aids including wheelchairs, and recreational and early childhood development supplies to help children regain a sense of normalcy and continue learning.
As the emergency response evolves into recovery, we'll continue to assess the situation and scale-up our response by mobilising additional resources to where ever is needed.
