Ebola Outbreak Emergency

An outbreak of the Ebola virus has occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

As of June 22nd 2026, 1,000 confirmed cases have been reported and 183 deaths. The World Health Organisation have declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Almost 3 million children and adolescents in DRC are at risk. With each passing hour the threat of the outbreak spreading increases - we need to act quickly to stop Ebola in its tracks.

How is UNICEF Responding?

Within 48 hours of the outbreak being confirmed, UNICEF had activated its highest emergency classification to enable a rapid response. We're on the ground, working alongside our partners to contain the spread and protect children, who are most at risk in any Ebola outbreak – not only from the virus itself, but from the wider disruption to health, nutrition, education and protection systems.

As of June 16th, UNICEF has procured US$3.3 million worth of supplies, including medical, food and WASH items, and deployed 38 staff to support the response.

In the initial stages of our response, we delivered nearly 50 tonnes of emergency supplies, such as disinfectants and soap, personal protective equipment, water purification tablets and water tanks. We also have an Emergency Rapid Response team deployed to help support Ebola risk communication and community engagement activities. This will help families understand how Ebola is transmitted and how to reduce the risk of infection.

"UNICEF's six-month response plan targets 3.7 million people." says Dr. Douglas Noble, UNICEF Global Lead for Public Health Emergencies and Global Incident Manager for Ebola.

"We've delivered 150 metric tons of supplies to Bunia, trained and deployed more than 1,600 community health workers and mobilisers, and 24 decontamination teams, already reaching over 160,000 households."

"We are also establishing nurseries in facilities close to Ebola Treatment Centres – these are safe spaces where children can be cared for while their parents are treated. Our first crèche opens in Bunia in the coming days."

Urgent funding is needed to help us contain the outbreak and protect vulnerable children.

How will my donation help?

UNICEF has been helping kids in the DRC and Uganda for decades. We work with our partners on the ground to provide lifesaving healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene to help fight against life-threatening diseases like Ebola.

  • $75 could provide soap and other hygiene items to protect children against Ebola and other deadly diseases.
  • $100 could help provide 10,000 water purification tablets, enough to make 50,000 litres of safe drinking water.
  • $150 could provide hygiene & sanitation kits to help protect two families against Ebola.
