Pacific ‘Fits Day
On Thursday October 15th, workplaces across Aotearoa are wearing their brightest Pacific threads,
celebrating Pasifika culture, and raising money to bring clean water to communities in the Pacific Islands.
For many of us, turning on a tap and getting safe water is something we don’t think twice about. But for some families and tamariki in the Pacific, it’s a luxury they don’t have.
15% of people across Pacific Island countries don’t have access to basic drinking water. 44% of children in Kiribati, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu lack access to good sanitation services.
Because of this, water and sanitation-related diseases are one of the leading causes of preventable death for children under 5 in Pacific Island nations.
UNICEF works alongside governments, communities and local partners to strengthen water systems, including climate-resilient water tanks, improved infrastructure, and toilets and handwashing facilities in schools and health centres.
None of this important mahi is possible without funding. That’s where Pacific ‘Fits Day comes in! Funds raised through Pacific 'Fits Day will support UNICEF's water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, helping children and communities build healthier, more resilient futures.
