The bigger picture

A child washes their hands

It is estimated that 1.4 million people, including nearly 400,000 children under five, die each year from preventable diseases. Diarrhea is a deadly disease and it's caused by a simple lack of poor hygiene facilities.

Between 2015 and 2024, 1.6 billion people gained access to basic hygiene services, raising global coverage from 66% to 80%. A huge win for children!

However, 1.7 billion people still lacked basic services, including 611 million people with no handwashing facilities at all. These are not just statistics. There are real people, in real danger of completely preventable diseases.

UNICEF is working in every corner of the globe to promote hand washing with tippy taps - because clean hands create brighter futures.

We’re committed to transparency. To see how we split up expenses and manage our costs, read our annual report or visit UNICEF Open to see a live overview of all our projects.
