Empowering Mothers: Siba’s mission in Syria
UNICEF health workers bring life-changing guidance to mothers. Health education is not just a lesson, it's an investment in a child's future.
“I adore my work as a health educator. The curiosity and excitement I see in women’s eyes during the sessions I lead, that’s what fuels my passion.” says Siba.
Fighting Malnutrition
With Education
Every day, 25-year-old gynaecologist Siba joins a UNICEF-supported mobile health and nutrition team in rural Damascus, delivering essential health and nutrition services to children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
For nearly six years, Siba has promoted breastfeeding and proper infant feeding practices. “Every day I meet dozens of mothers and children. Sadly, I’ve seen an increase in malnutrition, often due to incorrect feeding practices,” she explained.
To strengthen her sessions, Siba uses visuals, simple brochures, and real-life examples. “Sometimes I invite a mother who previously learned proper breastfeeding to co-facilitate with me. It helps build trust.”

BUILDING TRUST TO EMPOWER MOTHERS
“Many women simply don’t know the right techniques to breast feed,” she said. “They’re often unaware of how to position the baby, achieve a good latch, or how long feeding should last.”
In private consultations, she provides mothers with a safe space to practice what they’ve learned. One mother, Rama, was considering switching to infant formula, fearing she wasn’t producing enough milk. “I sat with her and explained how frequent and effective feeding can boost milk supply,” Siba recalled.
Weeks later, Rama returned, confident and reassured. “She thanked me from the bottom of her heart,” said Siba, smiling.

The most important development takes place in the first five years of life. When Siba educates mothers on nutrition, she is creating a powerful investment into children's lives.
Siba continues to walk alongside these women through pregnancy and after birth. “I see how hard they fight for their children. I want every mother to know: your baby is the most precious gift. They deserve the best start in life. Breastfeeding is like the strong foundation of a home, no matter how many storms come, that house will stand tall,” she said.
We want to thank our amazing donors for helping to empower these mothers and creating a brighter future for the children of Syria.
