  3. Myanmar Earthquake Emergency

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on 28th March, 2025.

The quake collapsed buildings, destroyed roads and left more than 3,700 dead, and over 5,000 injured. The earthquake was another cruel blow for children who were already suffering through conflict, extreme poverty and displacement, before this natural disaster struck.

It's now more than one month on, and more than 6.3 million people, including almost 2 million children, remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Our teams are on the ground in affected areas, working around the clock with affected children and families to support the emergency response. But more help is needed.

Thousands of children and families are still living in overcrowded, makeshift shelters with limited access to clean water, healthcare, and education. And with the monsoon season coming early, conditions are rapidly deteriorating — further exposing children to disease, displacement, and long-term harm.

UNICEF has been in Myanmar since 1950 and we'll stay and deliver for children through this current emergency, while continuing to support families with ongoing humanitarian assistance.

What is the situation in Myanmar?

Myanmar is now in its fourth year of escalating conflict, and millions of children are already living in fear, displacement, and deepening poverty. These earthquakes come on top of an already dire situation for struggling families.

Before the earthquakes, there were 19.9 million people, including 6.4 million children, requiring humanitarian assistance in this year. As you can imagine, these numbers are now significantly higher.

Children are being impacted by multiple crises, including natural disasters, disease outbreaks, food insecurity, inflation, loss of livelihoods, electricity shortages, interrupted or limited Internet and telecommunications services, and disrupted public services.

We'll work through the immediate response to this disaster, then our attention will shift to the ongoing recovery and rebuild phase. The people of Myanmar need our generous support at this critical time.

How is UNICEF responding?

UNICEF teams are on the ground, working closely with UN agencies, partners and stakeholders to respond to the current emergency situation and long-term humanitarian response.

We've delivered 227 metric tons of life-saving supplies - including medical kits, hygiene items, tents, and nutrition products, to children and families across the hardest-hit areas. But the needs continue to far outpace the resources available.

We distributed prepositioned supplies to children and families in affected areas, in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. We're also providing ongoing critical WASH supplies, including hygiene kits, soap, water purification chemicals, water storage containers and water filters, to local WASH partners to distribute in the affected regions.

We supported health services by providing Health Kits that cover 10,000 people for a period of three months. UNICEF also provided 4,000 household kits as well as delivery & newborn kits to frontline workers as needed to provide essential medical supplies during the ongoing earthquake response.

UNICEF has provided over 550,000 people with temporary access to safe water - primarily through the rapid delivery of water purification supplies - and reached more than 230,000 with critical hygiene items.

UNICEF and partners have provided direct health and nutrition support, reaching over 400,000 people, including 50,000 children under five and 5,000 pregnant and lactating women.

UNICEF has reached nearly 15,000 people with emergency cash assistance, prioritising the most vulnerable - including families with young children, persons with disabilities, and those at heightened protection risk.

Child protection services are being supported, including the identification of separated and unaccompanied children, including those who lost their parents and caregivers during the earthquake, care support (medical, psychological, shelter, alternative care), family tracing and reunification.

We're ensuring children's education can continue by providing Essential Learning Packages, consisting of notebooks and basic stationery items to children who've lost their homes. We've also distributed 5,000 of these packages and 2,000 sets of roofing sheets for temporary learning spaces.

As the situation evolves, our response will remain flexible to adapt to new and growing needs.
