Building a fairer future for every Kiwi kid

Our dedicated UNICEF Aotearoa helps children in New Zealand grow, prosper and thrive.

Building a brighter future

UNICEF New Zealand works with the New Zealand Government to make life better for children. We constantly push to improve policies affecting children, so that all New Zealand children can enjoy a brighter future. We also offer ways for New Zealanders to be involved in shaping better policies and practices for children. And because every child has the right to be heard, we always seek to give children and young people a voice in public debates. Our work is based around key conventions including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

our mission

Every child in New Zealand
has rights

Support us in challenging the New Zealand Government to do more for those children who are missing out. Every single child has 37 key rights. These include rights to a safe, warm home, good quality food, an education, and a fair justice system. Right now, many New Zealand children are missing out on these basic rights. Our role is to end this inequality, so that all children in Aotearoa are treated fairly. By making submissions to the New Zealand Government about its policy and legislation, and working with a broad base of community groups, UNICEF New Zealand raises awareness of matters that impact all New Zealand children. We also respond to key issues and organise resources for community groups, Iwi, and political influencers. UNICEF New Zealand with the communites throughout New Zealand to make sure everyone is aware of child rights and our responsibilities to the children of New Zealand.
