Silent Emergencies Fund

(C)UNICEF

Silent emergencies affect millions of children around the world.

(C) UNICEF/HQ050414/Lemoyne

UNICEF NZ's Silent Emergencies Fund enables us to react the moment a disaster strikes.

You can support UNICEF's emergency relief operations around the world, and help up respond quickly to children in distress, by donating to our Silent Emergencies Fund now.

Funds given to UNICEF for specific appeals cannot be transferred, even if the need is greater elsewhere.  Our Silent Emergencies Fund is different.  It acts as a pool of readily available funds which go to where the need is greatest, helping to save and improve the lives of children struck by disaster or living in emergency situations like war or famine.  This includes ongoing emergencies in countries like Darfur, Congo (DRC), Haiti and the Horn of Africa.  It's also standing by for new emergencies so that UNICEF can act quickly, saving as many lives as possible.

The Humanitarian Action Report 2008 outlines UNICEF's appeal for children and women in 39 emergencies around the world.

What Your Money Can Buy

$21 is the price of 5 large woolen blankets that will give children warmth and protect them from the elements.

$33 can provide 40 packets of high energy biscuits, especially developed for malnourished children in emergency situations.

$138 can buy a basic family water kit, containing items such as water containers, buckets, soap, and water purification tablets, sufficient to meet the needs of 10 families.
