Alison Mau

Alison Mau - an experienced broadcaster, Prime newsreader, and permanent back-up host on TVNZ's Breakfast programme - was delighted to take up the role of UNICEF NZ Ambassador.

A long-time campaigner for children's charities and AIDS awareness, Ali jumped at the chance to support UNICEF's work - and in particular UNICEF NZ's HIV/AIDS project in Papua New Guinea.

In October last year she visited the project and witnessed first-hand the problems the country is experiencing and how UNICEF-sponsored programmes are bringing hope to women and children with HIV.

"I don't think I was really ready for what I saw in Papua New Guinea" recalls Ali. "It was a complete eye-opener. As a mum I can't imagine what it must be like to lose your child or children to AIDS. It brought home to me that all these women and children you see in charity appeals are just like you and me but they have to deal with these appalling circumstances."

In the video above, Ali talks about why she has chosen to support UNICEF NZ.
