Hayley wants you to join with her to help children in Ghana!

Hayley Westenra, one of UNICEF's youngest-ever Ambassadors, wants you to work with her on a project that will bring education and clean water to thousands of children and their families in some of Ghana's poorest areas.

HAYLEY'S BIKES TRANSFORM LIVES

Girls in Ghana's rural communities face major challenges to attend school, especially at the secondary level, often having to travel long distances with the ever-present risk of sexual abuse and other forms of violence during travel.

By providing bicycles for thousands of girls living in deprived areas, Hayley's Bikes for Ghana programme has already resulted in a huge rise in girls' enrolment and attendance, improved academic performance, reduced drop-out rates, and boosted girls’ self-confidence.

Since 2001, in cooperation with local education authorities and schools, UNICEF has funded and distributed nearly 6,000 bicycles throughout Ghana. Help us supply even more by donating to Hayley's Bikes for Ghana project.

Clean water for school children

Water-bourne Guinea Worm is a major problem for children in parts of Ghana. Anyone getting water from a pond or well previously used by a sufferer of Guinea Worm can be infected. Little children are the most common victims, accounting for two thirds of cases.

To protect young children from Guinea Worm and other diseases in unsafe water, Hayley is supporting UNICEF NZ in bringing safe water to 30 pre-schools in one of the worst-affected areas. This includes training caretakers and mechanics so that the provision of safe water is a sustainable solution that can be looked after locally.

Hayley's visits to Ghana

Hayley has visited Ghana twice; first to see for herself the critical need for safe water and education and then to check on the progress of her projects. She visited several education sites and community water and hygiene education projects. She also met with children participating in a programme providing bicycles to help them get to school.
