14 July 2009. – The UN Children’s Fund will help children affected by the powerful earthquake in southwestern China with psycho-social support, education and recreation materials.

The magnitude 6 earthquake hit China’s Yunnan Province late last week, killing one person, injuring more than 300, and displacing some 250,000 people. The quake epicentre was Yao-an County, about 200km northwest of the provincial capital, Kunming.

The quake damaged or destroyed more than 75,000 homes in seven counties. Although some families are living with relatives, an estimated 150,000 people, including some 40,000 children, are living in tents or temporary shelters.

According to Chinese authorities, the quake caused cracking and minor damage to more than 700 schools, but no serious destruction. With summer recess underway, many school buildings are able to be used as temporary emergency shelters for displaced people.

UNICEF is working with partner organisations to determine the extent of the damage and needs of people in the emergency zone. With provincial authorities having provided food, tents, quilts and medical supplies, UNICEF is focusing on providing psycho-social support to children, along with educational and recreational materials.

UNICEF believes it is important for children affected by the trauma of an earthquake to be given a safe environment and support to regain a sense of normalcy and routine.
