The Kisesa Health Centre in Tanzania provides health care for children and mothers, including treatment for diseases like malaria and diarrhoea.

Kiwi UNICEF donors have helped UNICEF to build a new rainwater harvesting tank for the health centre.

Before the water tank was constructed, the centre had no choice but to buy water from a vendor. The amount they could purchase was insufficient to meet their needs, resulting in poor sanitation and the risk of infection for patients.

One patient, Flora Emmanuel, was brought to the centre after the still birth of her third child.  Because of a shortage of water, Flora recalled that “my mother had to ask for water from nearby homes for drinking, for my bath and for washing clothes.”

Now the centre can provide better services and sanitation for its patients.

This is particularly vital for women attending the centre to give birth and for preventing the spread of infections to new born babies.

Youth learn new skills

The Ihushi Youth Development Centre provided a construction team of ten young people to build the rainwater harvesting tank.

Every year, the Ihushi Centre provides training for 25 boys and girls from poor families in trade skills such as masonry and tailoring following completion of their primary education.

22 year old Malendeja Emmanuel, who has benefited from the Centre’s training courses, is leading the construction team and told UNICEF that “this work has given me more experience and an opportunity for newly trained young people for earning an income while at the same time practicing their acquired technical skills”.
