As people around the globe mark World Breastfeeding Week, UNICEF reflects on the status of breastfeeding in an article published in the Dominion Post newspaper.

In the article, UNICEF Executive Director, Dennis McKinlay, refers to research showing almost 20 per cent of New Zealanders feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding in public. In addition, a Ministry of Health survey found that many mothers feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding in public, citing reasons such as “people stare as they walk past”.

UNICEF encourages breastfeeding, which is good for babies, mothers and society. The article talks about initiatives that help to normalise breastfeeding in NZ society, such as new workplace law, the baby-friendly hospitals initiative, and a  Ministry of Health campaign that promotes breastfeeding.
