Haiti - Six Months On
The earthquake that devastated Haiti on the 12th January 2010 killed over 220,000 people and injured over 300,000. Close to 1.5 million children were directly affected; nearly double the entire population of children in New Zealand.UNICEF’s global response to this rapid-onset emergency has been unprecedented. To date, UNICEF has raised over NZ$343.9 million specifically for the rebuilding of Haiti.
This report details what UNICEF has achieved within the six months following the earthquake and the vision for the country’s reconstruction and development, with children at the centre of the plan.

Summary of key achievements to date:
EDUCATION- 185,000 children provided resources such as pencils and notebooks.
- 1,297 school tents distributed for 155,000 learners.
- 2,300 teachers and 3,000 education personnel trained by UNICEF.
- 275,000+ children immunised against major preventable diseases.
- 1.7 million people's health needs for three months covered through the distribution of 177 emergency health kits.
- 1.66 million litres of safe water supplied daily to 333,000; the equivalent of running a hose for 22 consecutive weeks!
- 9,000 toilets installed, improving sanitation for approximately 1.6 million people. UNICEF has pledged to support another 4,000 toilets.
- 2,000 severely malnourished children have received life-saving treatment.
- 186,000 children (9 months to 7 yrs) have received vitamin A supplements.
- 225 Child-Friendly Spaces established providing safe havens and psychosocial support to over 62,800 children.
- 2,000 separated children have been registered, and 337 children reunified with their families.
