With World Cup fever gripping the world, it’s timely to recognise the key role sport and play has in the health, happiness and well-being of children and young people. 0 Comments
UNICEF works with governments and partners throughout the world – including in South Africa – to use sport-based programmes to improve children’s lives and to strengthen communities. UNICEF is taking a leading role in caring for vulnerable children at the World Cup.
At the most fundamental level, sport and play are a child’s right, as detailed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Added to this is the broad consensus that regular physical activity is essential for the physical, mental, psychological and social development of children and adolescents. Involvement in sport can boost children’s health, improve academic performance and help reduce crime.
Sport, recreation and play are a fun way to learn values and lessons that will last a life time. They help prepare young people to meet the challenges they will face and to take leadership roles within their communities.
