Young people from around the world are being asked to come up with a slogan for a new UN year devoted to youth.

In an effort to harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in overcoming the challenges facing humankind, the United Nations proclaimed an International Year of Youth which will start on 12 August 2010.

With the theme ‘Dialogue and Mutual Understanding,’ the Year aims to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations and promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity.

“The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society. We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society.”

To spread the word about the International Year, a slogan contest is being held. From 25 January 2010 – 12 February 2010, you will have the chance to suggest a one to five word slogan for the International Year and to vote on your favourites through the “I like” function on Facebook. The final slogan will be selected by the UN Programme on Youth and will be used in communications for the International Year.
