A UN Children’s Fund team is en route to the earthquake and tsunami-affected region of the Solomon Islands to assess immediate aid needs.

A number of large earthquakes, including a 7.2 magnitude quake yesterday and a tsunami have hit the western region of the Solomon Islands near Gizo. The tsunami is the second to hit the area within the last three years.

A UNICEF team is travelling by canoe from Gizo to the affected area to assess damage and humanitarian needs. In addition, two staff from UNICEF Suva are being deployed to bolster UNICEF personnel based in Gizo and Honiara.

The assessment team is expected to report back tomorrow with UNICEF on standby to draw on prepositioned emergency supplies of drinking water, and a range of sanitation and health supplies.
