In 156 countries and territories, UNICEF's 7,000 field staff use hard-won expertise to meet the challenges facing children and those who care for them. Our mission is to reach the world’s children in need and give them a chance to survive and flourish. In the face of natural disaster, in the face of disease and poverty, in the face of hunger and exclusion, in the face of war and upheaval - our goal is to give all children a childhood.
We believe that every child should have clean water, food, health care, education, and a safe environment in which to grow up. UNICEF upholds the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and works to hold the international community responsible for their promises to children.
UNICEF contributes to the well-being of children through programmes that help them survive and thrive to adulthood, and that provide essential medicines, vaccines, educational, health and emergency supplies. We ensure that our programmes are sustainable and make a lasting difference in children's lives by working with local communities, and empowering people to manage for themselves.
Our global reach allows us to share knowledge across borders, while our local presence (over 90 per cent of our staff work in developing countries) means we can deliver assistance when and where it is needed most. Our worldwide presence also means that we are ready to respond rapidly wherever disaster strikes, delivering life-saving help for children.
UNICEF is unique among world organisations and unique among those working with young people. We have the global authority to influence decision makers and the diversity of partners to turn the most innovative ideas into reality and make change happen. We bring our influence to bear on the individuals and institutions that serve the youngest generation. We work closely with children, women and communities as well as governments, other UN agencies, faith-based groups, non-government organisations and the private sector on behalf of all children without regard to race, creed or religion.
Young people are deeply involved in everything we do, and when they have a voice in public debate, everyone benefits.
All that we do helps children to realise their full potential.
