CHILDREN IN CONFLICT - SYRIA

The conflict in Syria has continued to feature in our headlines for more than two years. Thousands of innocent children continue to be affected by the violent internal conflict.  The Syria Powerpoint focuses on what it means to be a refugee or IDP, and explains how agencies like UNICEF are responding to this humanitarian emergency.

As the temperatures drop to zero or below, UNICEF is ramping up our operations in Syria to help displaced people cope with the harsh winter conditions.  Watch the video or read related 3 News article.

'Syrian Children Speak Out' Level 5 Social Science 
The Syrian conflict rages on and is now into its third year.  5.2 million people have been forced from their homes and more than 70,000 people have been killed.
The UNICEF video 'Syrian Children Speak Out', is a moving and compelling insight into just how deeply Syrian children are being affected by the deadly conflict.  We have developed a Level 5 Social Science Resource to assist with the viewing and comprehension of this video.

Banging the Drum - Social Sciences Level 5

A social inquiry unit aimed at helping New Zealand students understand the Pacific as more than a tourist destination.  The Pacific is a vast and complex geographical area made up of 22 countries and territories spread out over 30 million square kilometres of ocean, comprising of unique and diverse cultures.  Through this unit we explore themes such as poverty, climate change, water, education and development aid.   Download PDF

The Cardboard House Competition

Check out the Cardboard House Competition and supporting education unit.  Schools that participate could win insulation for their school.  The unit highlights why poor housing is harmful, and calls for the standard of all housing to be improved in NZ.  Download the learning documents.

United Nations convention on the rights of the child - uncroc

UNICEF fair Play

A social inquiry unit based on the benefits of Fair Play in formal and informal play situations, ideal for building a fair and cooperative classroom and playground ethos. Students will think critically about why we have rules and how rules affect our lives.  They will investigate the concept of Fair Play and how Fair Play can realise the right to play and be included for all children.

Tuvalu - sunshine and Sea water

A state of emergency has been declared in Tuvalu due to a severe water shortage.  Sunshine and Sea Water explains what the water shortage means to the people of Tuvalu, and looks at how UNICEF is helping to bring relief to the people.
