UNICEF Prepares to Distribute W.A.S.H. Kits to Fiji Families

UNICEF is continuing to work with authorities in Fiji and Samoa to offer relief and to assist in the recovery after Cyclone Evan . In Fiji, where almost 14,000 people remain in evacuation centres, the agency has assembled 5,000 WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) Kits ready for dispatch and is meeting today with the National Disaster Management Office and other emergency partners to discuss how it can provide further assistance, particularly in the areas of water and sanitation.  “The risk of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, leptospirosis and typhoid continues to be of concern,” UNICEF NZ Executive Dennis McKinlay said.  “These diseases can be fatal, especially in children.
