Ismail's Remarkable Recovery

It’s an extraordinary transformation and you wouldn’t believe he was even the same child.

This time last year, Ismail could barely open his eyes because his body was swollen with severe malnutrition. Today, he happily runs around and proudly helps his mum collect water. This is the story of his amazing recovery.

Thanks to the caring support of Kiwis and people all over the world, UNICEF has saved countless children’s lives in the Horn of Africa Food Crisis:
  • We've treated 455,000 malnourished children in Somalia with special emergency food
  • We've vaccinated 7.9 million children across the Horn of Africa, protecting kids from measles
  • We've given 584,368 people in drought-stricken Ethiopia safe water so they can drink, cook and wash
  • We're running schools in Kenya's refugee camps so children can learn life skills, play with friends and get psychosocial support even when their lives are in turmoil.
The famine ended in February yet the situation remains fragile. This continues to be a children’s emergency and we still need urgent help.

We are also saving children suffering in the Food Crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa: donate now to give emergency food and safe water to a child like Ismail.
