Imagine sitting in a classroom and being taught maths in a language you are totally unfamiliar with. Imagine trying to read a book written in a language you have never spoken. This is the schooling that Thui’s older brothers and sisters were forced to face. Luckily for Thui, her teacher speaks in her own dialect, as well as in Vietnamese, helping Thui to be an engaged and inspired young student.

Thui and her friend are from the Hmong ethnic minority group and do not speak Vietnamese. Historically, the Vietnamese education system has excluded children of her ethnicity.

$32 can buy 50 exercise books,
helping two classes learn to read and write.

Across South East Asia, 20% of the children of the 11 million members of ethnic minorities are discriminated against because their language is simply not spoken in schools. These children are being marginalised from society.

Education is fundamental for a child to escape the cycle of poverty and achieve a better life. Going to school gives a child the skills and opportunity to reach their potential and contribute to their country’s society and economy.

As an educated girl, Thui will grow up to marry later and have healthier and fewer children
than her older sisters who were excluded from school. She will be in a better position to care for her own children in time, giving them the love, food and care they need.

With the valued support of Global Parents, UNICEF is working with the Vietnamese Government to ensure that all children can access a good education. We're developing a bilingual curriculum so that children can learn in their own dialect as well as Vietnamese.

Global Parents are transforming the structures that keep children trapped in poverty. Become a Global Parent today and you will help all children get the education they deserve.
