Pacific Birth Registration Appeal

Have you seen Joseph?

You probably haven't seen him. Joseph's government doesn't even know he’s alive!

This is because Joseph’s birth was not registered, meaning he is essentially invisible. He may not be able to go to school or even access health care.

Help a child like Joseph be seen: donate just $11 to register a child’s birth today.

Joseph doesn't count

For a child like Joseph, being unregistered makes everything in his young life harder. He may not be able to go to school or get his vital childhood immunisations at the right age.

Joseph is more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation – who can prove that he is not old enough to work, if he doesn’t have a birth certificate?

Joseph doesn’t count. And sadly, he is not alone: thousands of children born across the Pacific are not registered. In the Solomon Islands, only 0.1%* of births were registered in 2007.

Register a Birth - You can Help these children be seen

You can help make sure that children are registered at birth. You can help give them the protection and opportunities that birth registration promises a child. Please donate today.
  • $11 will register one birth
  • $55 will register five babies
  • $110 will register 10 babies
Currently, registering a baby's birth is no easy feat in Pacific Island nations, because many babies are born in remote villages. But with your help, we can put create a new system where midwives can register a child’s birth via mobile phone. This means however remote a child's place of birth is, they can still be registered.

UNICEF NZ and the Solomon Islands' Government want to make sure that every single child born from 2015 onwards is registered. This is an ambitious goal, so we need your help.

Birth registration is essential to a real life

Birth registration for Joseph and other children is crucial. It enables them to access essential services, creates a protective environment for them, and defends their rights. It is essential for:
  • Accessing health care and immunisations
  • Ensuring that he is enrolled in school at the right age
  • Protecting him from child labour (enforcing laws relating to minimum age for employment)
  • Securing his right to a nationality
  • Protecting him from being trafficked
  • Getting a passport, opening a bank account, voting or finding employment
  • Preventing girls from being forced into marriage before they are legally eligible
Without birth registration, governments don’t even know how many children there are in their country. This makes it difficult to plan and provide basic services for children, such as planning how many schools to build, or how many nurses to train.

Please donate using the form on the right and help us register children today.
