Africa Food Crisis

Stop child hunger in Africa

Right now, droughts and rising food prices in West Africa are putting more than a million children at risk of starvation.

The countries of West Africa (the Sahel) have among the highest death rates in the world. One in five children die before the age of five.

To prevent a wide-scale emergency, UNICEF is sending life-sustaining supplies to the region before it is too late.

Just $30 will feed a malnourished child for 2 weeks. Please donate to our emergency work for children today, using the form on the right.

How you can help a Starving child

  • $30 can feed a hungry child with special therapeutic food for two weeks
  • $52 can provide 30 packs of high-energy biscuits for malnourished children
  • $105 can provide 30 litres of nutrient rich therapeutic milk
We'll put your donation to use immediately in the most effective way.

UNICEF is saving lives

UNICEF is saving children's lives in both the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya) and West Africa (the Sahel, including Niger, Chad, Nigeria).

Thanks to our early action in the Horn of Africa at the end of 2010, UNICEF and partners have treated millions of children suffering from malnutrition and disease.
  • UNICEF has delivered 113 planes and 39 ships full of life-saving aid
  • We're supporting 800 feeding centres and will feed over 200,000 families over the next half year in Somalia alone
  • We've helped 321,434 students in 1,379 Somali schools return to school
However, thousands of children remain in imminent danger of death. This is our biggest emergency focus for the year.

In West Africa, a new food crisis is emerging. Low rain and poor harvests mean that the ‘lean season’ – when food from the last harvest runs out – could begin in some countries as early as March, rather than as usual in June.

UNICEF is providing 95 per cent of the supplies and equipment needed to treat children suffering from malnutrition in 50 hospitals in Niger alone.

But we urgently need help to reach more children. Before it's too late.

Please help save children's lives. Donate now using the form on the right.
